31 Mar Stop Worrying About What Others Have
It can be all too easy to compare our lives to others and look at what they have compared to what we ourselves have. When it comes to dressage, you only have to head to a competition to see all the flash horses, floats, horse trucks, expensive riding gear and so much more. It can be very easy for jealousy and envy to step in, but the truth is these are wasted emotions and somebody else’s success has nothing to do with you. Try not to get caught in the trap of this and instead try a different approach.
Changing our behaviour doesn’t happen overnight and it can be easier said than done, but when executed you can dramatically watch your life change for the better. Someone once said to me that the only time you should look into your neighbor’s bowl is to make sure they have enough. I just love this, we should celebrate and support one another and not judge, compare or let jealousy creep in.
So how do we achieve this?
To begin with, my advice is that you sit down by yourself and do self-reflection. Write down the things you’re doing that you feel are working and the things that are not working. Write down what you are grateful for and where you want to head. Then begin by working on replacing what’s not working with other methods or actions. Do this one at a time and eventually, you will have a plan of attack that works towards you achieving your goals that you can focus purely on. When we don’t have goals or a clear direction we tend to get caught up in comparing to others. However, when we have a clear path, we create content with where we are and where we are heading. This is a crucial element of happiness.
Another way to attack this sort of behavior is to look for a moment to those that are less fortunate and have 98% less than you and not forward to the 1% that have more. Appreciate where you are right now and how far you have come to get to where you are. If you choose to look at what others have, do it with a heart of inspiration, instead of envy. Knowing what it has taken you to get to where you are, others would have been on their own journey to achieve what they have, admire this.
Success takes hard work, dedication and a commitment towards your goals. Everyone’s journey is different and it’s important to stay focused on your own journey, your own successes and your own goals. Less complaining, more doing.
If things still aren’t working and your not sure how to get towards your goals, get yourself a mentor, surround yourself with those who can help cultivate the person and rider you choose to be and create a timeline. Don’t look to the left or to the right! Keep the blinders on and stay focused on your path! Use other peoples successes as motivation to help you stay focused and striving towards those goals.
When you compare yourself to others, that is a recipe for stress and frustration. It is only natural as HUMAN BEINGS to compare yourself to others, so your not alone. It’s in our nature to look at what we have or don’t have or want or whatever it is. The key is to train yourself away from this though as it doesn’t serve or help you. Don’t worry about what you HAVE. Worry about what you can DO in terms of value and be supportive and encouraging to everyone around you.
So next time you’re out and about and you start to compare what you have to your neighbours or friends, be supportive and encourage instead of letting jealousy and envy slip in. Watch how when you do this you have a much more enjoyable experience.
