Five Ways To Lose Fat Smarter
As a dressage rider it is important that we feel good within our own skin, so today I wanted to share with you some tips on how you can lose fat smarter. There are so many fad diets out there, pills to pop and whatever else when it comes to burning body fat and marketing companies know how to target and sell more products! Doesn’t matter if they don’t actually work or not and what damage they do to your body in the process.
As a personal trainer I also know that most women have tried some form of diet if not many in order to lose weight and shred unwanted body fat. Men too! The truth is quick fixes and crash diets don’t work. Our body is a system of systems and everything is connected. So its first really important to understand that exercising to outrun the calories you are overeating is a recipe for disaster. In fact just thinking that exercise alone is the best way to lose weight is terrible, because the more you exercise the hungrier you will get and the more exhausted your body will become. Especially if you are combining this exercise with a bad diet.
Food affects the cells within your body within minutes of you consuming it. So 100 calories worth of broccoli is going to have a completely different cellular reaction than 100 calories of insulin spiking jelly beans. Not only does the food you eat affect the cells it affects your hormones and burning body fat requires the right hormonal reactions and responses to take place in your body. So eating food that messes with that is going to affect your chances of burning body fat successfully.
Exercise is a great way to help you lose weight, when combined with a good diet. However trying to outrun or out train your bad diet is the worst way to try and lose weight. In fact this combination could cause you to put on weight due to the stress your body is under and therefore increasing cortisol. To much cortisol can cause your body to hold and store extra body fat.
Now as a rider, don’t get me wrong schooling your horse or horses regularly is a great form of exercise. However its important to know that your body gets used to what its used to. So if you ride regularly and have been for some time and are struggling to lose the weight, the riding alone wont be enough. So this is where you need to get smarter. It doesn’t mean you have to slog it out for hours at the gym, plus ride horse, plus muck out, plus work…..I get it. Time is precious! I am about intelligent smart training and smart food choices.
Training For Fat Loss
When we train aerobically this taps into fat and uses it as a fuel source. Then when we weight train this builds muscle, creates the right hormonal response for fat burning and increases metabolic rate. We need the combination of both combined with a active lifestyle in order for success.
Exercise is a huge part of the equation, but just as important is a nutrient dense real food diet. Starving yourself and being super restrictive on calories isn’t the way to go either.
Here are five ways to lose fat smarter
Here’s a five-step approach that I talk about a lot and provide within the online gym. A step by step guide to help you achieve long lasting success with out the need to exhaust and overtrain.
1. Create a realistic real food diet that works for your body.
2. Lift heavy weights and move functionally
3. Combine workINs with workOUTS
4. Aim to walk 10,000 steps per day off your horse and spend 50% of your day standing or moving
5. Start Sprinting or doing interval training workouts
Including high-intensity interval training (HIIT) that combine sprints and lifting weights is a great way to get your body burning body fat. These allow you to burn calories at an accelerated rate for days after the workout. Then combining these with movement that restore and rebalance the body such as mobility, yoga and walking is a great combination for success. These can be done in as little as 10 minutes in your living room.
Get the balance right and don’t just think more exercise is the only solution, while at the same time just nutrition. Put just as much emphasis on your nutrition, sleep, recovery and the right exercise and you will then get results.
