How to Get Started with Strength Training (Even If You’re a Total Beginner)
Let’s be honest — starting strength training can feel intimidating.
If you’ve never lifted weights before…
If the thought of “strength” brings up images of heavy barbells and sweaty gym floors…
If you’re unsure where to begin, or afraid of doing it “wrong”…
You’re not alone — and you’re not behind.
Strength training doesn’t have to be complicated, extreme, or uncomfortable.
In fact, for riders over 40, the most effective approach is often the most supportive, simple, and consistent one.
Let’s walk through how to get started — one small, confident step at a time.

First, What Is Strength Training — and Why Should You Care?
At its core, strength training is just resistance-based movement.
It means using some form of resistance — like your bodyweight, dumbbells, bands, or gravity — to challenge your muscles in a way that encourages them to grow stronger over time.
You don’t need to train extreme.
You don’t need to feel sore for days.
And you definitely don’t need to be “fit” to begin.
You just need a system that meets you where you’re at and progresses gently — which is exactly what we’ve built into our DRT Strength Roadmap.
Why It’s Especially Important for Riders Over 40
Starting in our 40s, we naturally begin to lose muscle mass (it’s called sarcopenia — and yes, it’s as common as it sounds).
But we can slow, stop, or even reverse that process with the right kind of training.
Strength training helps you:
Support your joints and spine
Improve balance and posture
Ride with more ease and control
Maintain lean muscle and energy as you age
Feel stronger in the saddle — and in daily life
Even just 20–30 minutes a few times per week can create a noticeable difference.
“But I’ve Only Ever Done Yoga or Pilates…”
That’s a great foundation.
You’ve already built body awareness, stability, and mobility — all essential for rider fitness.
Now, strength training will help you build on that by increasing muscle tone, improving joint resilience, and adding the power and support your riding needs long-term.
And don’t worry — you don’t need to trade one for the other. Strength training works beautifully with your existing routine.
What You Actually Need to Get Started (Equipment Guide)
You don’t need a full gym or fancy machines.
To start strength training at home, all you need are a few simple tools:
- Dumbbells
Start with two pairs: a light pair (2–3kg) and a medium pair (4–6kg).
You’ll use these for squats, presses, rows, lunges, and more.
- Resistance Bands
A long loop or tube band with handles works great for rows, pull-downs, and glute work.
Lightweight, affordable, and easy to store.
- Dowel
This is essentially a broomstick, easy to pick up from your local hardware store.
Perfect for developing motor patterns of lifting weights without any load.

That’s it. No gym. No crowds. No machines.
Just a quiet space, your equipment, and your horse nearby if you’re lucky!
