Why You Can’t Sit Deep (Even When You’re Doing Everything Right)

That feeling of almost…

There’s a stage in riding that’s hard to explain, but easy to recognise when you’re in it.

You’re no longer a beginner.

You understand what you’re meant to do.

You know the words.

Sit deeper.

Relax your seat.

Follow the movement.

And yet… something doesn’t quite land.

Your seat never fully settles.

You’re not bouncing, exactly.

But you’re not fully in the saddle either.

There’s a slight feeling of hovering.

Of holding.

Of being just above where you feel like you should be.

And the more you try to sit deeper, the more it feels like you’re chasing something just out of reach.

When You’re Doing Everything Right… But It Still Doesn’t Click

I see this often in riders who are doing everything right.

They’re aware.

They’re trying.

They’re listening.

And that’s often what makes it more confusing.

Because if you’re doing all the right things…why doesn’t it feel the way it’s meant to?

Sitting Deep Isn’t Something You Do

What I’ve come to understand over time is this:

Sitting deep isn’t something you do.

It’s something your body either allows… or doesn’t.

What Depth Actually Asks of Your Body

Depth asks for something quite specific.

It asks for your hips to move freely, without resistance.

It asks for your pelvis to organise itself quietly, without being held.

It asks for your core to support you, without gripping.

And underneath all of that, it asks for something even less visible.

It asks your body to feel safe enough…to let go.

The Part We Don’t Talk About

From the outside, sitting deep looks like a position.

But from the inside, it feels like a release.

And release only happens when the body trusts that it will still be supported.

If there’s any uncertainty in that system—

if the hips don’t quite move,

if the core isn’t quite supporting,

if one side is doing more than the other—

the body will quietly hold on.

Not dramatically.

Not obviously.

Just enough to keep you slightly lifted.

Slightly guarded.

Slightly out of the saddle.

Why Trying Harder Doesn’t Work

This is where many riders get stuck.

Because the instinct is to try harder.

To push down into the saddle.

To make the seat deeper.

To “fix” it.

But pushing down isn’t the same as settling.

And your body knows the difference.

Depth Is Not Pressure. It’s Permission.

A deep seat isn’t created by pressure.

It’s created by permission.

Permission for the hips to move.

Permission for the pelvis to respond.

Permission for the body to trust that it doesn’t need to hold itself up.

And that kind of permission doesn’t come from thinking differently.

It comes from your body having the capacity to do it.

When It Starts to Change

When the hips begin to open, even slightly, you feel it.

When the core starts to support you in a way that feels quiet and reliable, you feel that too.

And gradually, something changes.

Not all at once.

But enough that you notice it.

You stop trying to sit deeper…and you find that you are.

The Moment It Clicks

It’s often subtle.

A moment where the saddle feels closer.

Where your seat bones feel heavier, but softer.

Where the movement of the horse comes through you… instead of around you.

And once you feel that, even briefly, you realise it was never something you were meant to force.

It was something your body needed to be ready for.

Where to Begin

So if you’ve been trying to sit deeper, and it’s not quite happening yet—it may not be about trying more.

It may be about giving your body what it needs so it no longer has to hold you just above it.

For many riders, that begins with restoring movement through the hips and building the kind of strength that allows the body to feel supported without gripping.

That’s exactly why the Hip Suppleness program is such a powerful place to start.

It helps your body release tension and move more freely.

And alongside that, the Strength Roadmap builds the quiet support that allows you to trust those new ranges.

Because this isn’t about choosing one or the other.

It’s about building both… together.

And When It Does…

When that begins to change…

depth isn’t something you chase.

It’s something that finds you.

The Goal
